Day 02 - Los Glaciares National Park

Los Glaciares National Park has been declared to be Mankind Heritage by the UNESCO. These glaciers, about 47 of them, show a cold and wild workd of 10 thousand years ago. The most famous is Perito Moreno Glacier, located in the extreme south – west of Lago Argentino, 80 km away from Calafate. Is was named after the great Argentine explorer from the 19th Century and it is one of the few advancing glacier, that is why, it has become a mayor amazing landscape in southamerica. Every certain time, from its front walls of 60 mts high fall down giant blocks of ice, as big as buildings, into the waters of Brazo Rico or Canal de los Tempanos, then sail to the main part of the lake. However, there is more; the advancing of the glacier, makes it approach to Peninsula Magallanes, on the opposite side of the lake, where there are balconies to be able to enjoy it. The cycle takes between 4 to 6 years and it divides the lake in two parts. The Brazo Rico becomes dammed and rises approximately 35 mts over its normal level. Then, the waters slowly go through a tunnel at the front of the glacier until pressure makes it fall.
The spectacle is indescribable, huge waves are formed, and the process begins all over again.

Duration: 5 (five) hours

We will begin the excursion at Puerto de la bahia Bajo de las Sombras (Port), about 7 km from Mirador del Glaciar. On board in a 20 - minute trip, cross over Lago Rico and arrive to a shelter where tourist guides will organize a walk of 20 minutes up to the Glacier.
There we will be instructed on how to wear the grampones (mountaineering grapple shoes). The walk on the glacier lasts for about 2 hours. We will see a variety of crevices, natural drains and small lagoons. The surface of the ice is irregular but firm and safe. Towards the end of the tour we go back to the shelter walking through the exuberant Magallanico forest where we will have lunch enjoying the view outside. Then, we return to the port and a special bus will be weiting for us to take us to Mirador del Glaciar. There, we will walk along the platforms for around an hour and after that, return to El Calafate. This tour is neither highly physically demanding nor inconvenient for people with difficulty to move about. Ages allowed between 10 - 60.
